CARNIVAL 2008

Carnival 2008 was held on Sunday October 26th and thanks to all those who dresed up, built floats, decorated houses, helped in all sorts of ways, and to all who came to see the spectacle,

T H A N K _ Y O U for your support.

Events started at 1:30 pm with the judging of decorated premises in the village and were followed by more judging, music, Crowning of the Carnival Queen and Princess, more music and entertainment and, of course the Processions.

Friday evening had seen the Carnival Service in St Peter's, attended by the Carnival Royalty, the Bonfire Boys and many supporters from the village. We were treated to music from Pans Aflame from the Primary School and the St Peter's Puppets. The Service was followed by Rings Night in the Queen's Head with the usual keenly fought competition.

Over the coming week, we shall be posting more reports, a list of competition and float winners, and some of our own pictures.

But for a complete set of pictures, please see http://carnivalphotos.co.uk for a huge range of pictures taken during the day where you can order copies (with donations to carnival funds for any photos purchased).

Past Carnivals

Carnival 2007

Carnival 2007 was due to be held on Sunday 30th September. However, due to financial considerations, we had to cancel the event for 2007 only. Chairman John Osman tended his resignation which was reluctantly accepted. John has been unstinting in his support for the Carnival and has been responsible, since 2004, for keeping the event alive over a period of extreme challenges. These included the loss of the Abbey for our principal fund-raising event Blues At The Abbey, and 2 years of drenched Carnival days.

However, there was some Carnival activity with a Ticthfield Carnival Fayre on Sunday September 30th at Barry's Meadow starting at about noon and running through until mid-late evening. There were stalls, music, Carnival Royalty, a parade of floats, children's fancy dress, decorated village, hog roast (or similar), children's fun fair etc etc etc. The aim to maintain the Carnival Spirit was fully achieved and we raised funds for a full Carnival in 2008.

Carnival 2006

Carnival 2006 was held on a very wet Sunday October 22nd.

This was a day to test the forbearance of everybody. The Bonfire Boys could not believe the state of the weather for a second year running. All those who continued despite the pouring rain were the heroes of the day. Two groups in particular must be mentioned: The Laura Dunkley School of Dance and Performing Arts put on a fantastic Mary Poppins routine and continued to perform their routine whilst getting wetter and wetter as the day wore on. Also deserving a mention were the Medina Band from the Isle of Wight who performed as best they could for the afternoon procession but had to withdraw from the evening one because of problems with uniforms and instruments from the rain.

Needless to say, takings were down and, as costs had increased for security etc, the day overall was disastrous financially. However, the Royalty and the crowning ceremony brought a ray of local sunshine to the proceedings, as can be seen from some of the photos below.
